From the Archives

This painting is probably 10 years old by now. One of my first successful large paintings. I think it measures 30 inches by 40 inches. My boss liked it so much that it ended up in her office. I made sure she took it home when she retired. It looks great in her vaulted-ceiling living room. My inspiration for this piece was a quiet abstract piece by Ed Corbett, a California painter who ended up in Taos, New Mexico. He was a definite influence on Richard Diebenkorn in the early 50s. Corbett never got the attention he deserved and is often referred to as a painter's painter. The USU Art Museum has two of his pieces.

From the Archives

My wife, Sharon, hosts a Friday Flashback on her blog and embeds a great video from the 80's or 90's that puts to shame anything being recorded today (Except for Confuse the Cat, Interpol, Snowden, Department of Eagles.) Anyway, here's a painting I did as a junior or senior at Utah State almost 10 years ago. At the time I was experimenting with a gesso/joint compound application on canvas. Once the shapes were established (long live masking tape) I would dye the painting with different acrylic washes. This was one of my first successes. I used to make lots of these, but they chip really easily and you only get a couple of chances to get it right. I'm a major revisionist and love to fix, fix, fix so I moved on to other techniques. This is still one of my favorites.

Place No. 9

No. 9 measures approximately 7.5 inches wide by 9 3/4 inches tall. It was painted with acrylic paint on acid free paper and then varnished. I painted No. 9 in March 2009.

Untitled No. 19

I finished No. 19 in March 2009. It measures approximately 7 1/16 inches by 6 7/8 inches. It was painted with acrylic on acid free paper and then varnished. It has a 1/4 inch white border for matting or framing. This started out as a painting exercise but the final result was very satisfying.

Untitled No. 18

Untitled No. 18 was finished March 2009. It measures 7 1/4 inches wide and 9 1/2 inches long. No. 18 was painted with acrylic paint on acid free paper. This is the second time I tried this composition and the colors are much better this time around.

Place No. 7

Place No. 7 was painted in February 2009. It measures 7 1/2 inches wide by 9 1/2 inches tall. It is painted on acid free paper and then varnished. No. 7 almost didn't work out when I spilled yellow paint everywhere. I scraped off as much as I could and then covered the bottom half with what you see now and things just worked out. Disasters are a critical part of the painting process...
